If you are looking for a lifestyle change, whether it is retirement or just a new way of life, Thomasville is the perfect location. The national media consistently identifies Thomasville as one of the best places to retire in the nation. In 2005, CBS News/The Early Show singled out Thomasville as “outstanding in terms of climate, housing prices and entertainment opportunities.” US News & World Report called Thomasville “amenity rich for its small size.” Recently, USA Today featured Thomasville as a haven for retirement with its small-town appeal.
Regardless of whether you are looking for leisure living in a mild four-season environment, excellent shopping, dining and cultural activities with historic charm or world-class medical facilities, Thomasville is now recognized as a retirement destination. Our southern hospitality and cordial living also landed Thomasville as one of the top 40 cities in the book, Retire in Style. Thomasville is a thriving small town, like the ones you remember from your childhood, where you can escape the hustle and become part of a friendly community. Come for a visit and you may never want to leave.
From golfing to bird watching, Thomasville’s outdoor recreation includes two area golf courses, one private, one public; Birdsong Nature Center features educational programs on wildlife preservation along with bird watching trails and butterfly gardens; Myrtlewood Hunting Plantation offers championship sporting clay courses along with fishing and hunting. In addition, Cherokee Lake and Paradise Park provide a glimpse of the natural surroundings and rose gardens cherished by locals and visitors. The YMCA, with its two facilities, offers extensive programs designed for retirees. Fitness training, floor aerobics and water aerobics are “senior” favorites. Convenient class schedules, a variety of exercise machines and personal trainers are available. In addition to fitness, a program for Active Older Adults sponsors community walks and dance lessons.
Prefer to just relax and watch the world go by? Stroll to one of Thomasville’s famous landmarks, The Big Oak, a 322 year-old tree with a limb span wider than Niagara Falls is deep and the largest of its kind east of the Mississippi; visit one of Thomasville’s galleries or attend a production of the Thomasville Entertainment Foundation. Both showcase world-class talents. Apply your own talents and join one of Thomasville Cultural Center’s many art or literary groups. You might opt to join other writers who hold monthly meetings at the Thomas County Library. Options abound for the creative!
For continuing education, Thomasville offers a range of classrooms. Archbold Hospital, in addition to its excellent care and diverse medical staff, sponsors periodic lectures by staff members (both in the main hospital and at the Integrative Medical Center). Thomas University, an accredited liberal arts university, offers courses for adults in addition to its full undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Southwest Georgia Technical College offers Associate Degree Diplomas as well as Technical Certificate of Credit Programs in over 70 different program areas.
Other arts centers include the Thomas County Historical Society, an interesting museum in the heart of one of the oldest neighborhoods in town. The Historical Society presents a lecture series featuring outstanding historians. Many are local residents who provide a glimpse of the region’s history through their published memoirs. Should you desire to trace your own family tree, visit the Genealogy Library located in the heart of downtown Thomasville.
The community offers many opportunities for volunteers. Hands on Thomas County, founded in 2003, follows Hands on Atlanta and other similar organizations throughout Georgia in its quest to increase awareness of service opportunities. It builds a sense of civic responsibility by bringing individuals, businesses, schools and organizations together through volunteer activities. This, in turn, fosters strong alliances with Thomas County’s non-profit and volunteer agencies. Habitat for Humanity offers a great opportunity for a cross section of citizens with a penchant for home improvement to build, renovate and make a dream a reality for some of our deserving residents. Thomasville Landmarks, a society dedicated to the preservation of historic buildings, some listed on the National Registry, welcomes talented individuals willing to give some time to restoration.
Whatever your lifestyle, you’ll find Thomasville accommodates it. So, come visit…and stay awhile! Welcome to Thomasville!
